Bill Gates, the son of Mary & William H. Gates Sr, was born on October 28, 1955 in Seattle, Washington. Gates has two sisters, Kristianne (older) and Libby (younger). His mother was a teacher turned philanthropist, and his father was a very successful lawyer. His mother, May, died in 1994 at the age of 64. HIs father passed in 2020 at the age of 94.

When he was was a kid, Bill Gates was a passionate reader who would spend hours reading through various books and encyclopedias.

At the age of 13, Gates was sent to Seattle’s prestigious Lakeside School for prep work. His two best subjects were math and science, but he also enjoyed acting and English.

Bill’s interest in electronics was sparked during his time at Lakeside School, as he was given the opportunity to use a computer as part of a program with a The Mother’s Club. Using BASIC, he developed a tic-tac-toe software that allowed people to compete against the machine.

Bill was a Lakeside High School graduate in 1973. His accomplishments as a graduate were many, but one of the most impressive was his  SAT score of 1590 out of 1600, a testament to his genius that would later make him one of the richest people in the world.

Professional Life

During his time in high school, Gates would meet a man by the name of Paul Allen.

After a combination of successful projects spanning a variety of computer-based programs,  Gates  and Allen would create ‘Micro-Soft’ in 1975. Just a year later, this company would be renamed to what we know it to be today – Microsoft.

By the late 1970s and early 1980s, Gates and Allen were solidifying Microsoft as a powerful software in the computer industry. This was right around the time when other household names like Intel, IBM, and Apple were becoming leaders in the space.

IBM was one of the first adopters of Microsoft’s software, which would later become a leading software in most PCs built during the 1980s.

During Gates’ tenure, Microsoft would bring life-changing products to market – notably the  Windows Operating System, Microsoft Office,  Outlook, XBOX and XBOX One, Windows Surface, and Surface Pro, and acquired the popular business networking site LinkedIn.

With that being said, Microsoft isn’t the only reason why Bill Gates’ net worth is so high. He is also an incredibly successful investor focused on projects geared towards sustainable futures for the planet.
